Is the Tower of Terror Scary?

The Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is considered a thrill ride and can be considered scary for some visitors. The ride simulates an elevator drop in a haunted hotel and features special effects, such as flashing lights and spooky imagery.

The ride also includes a free fall section, which can be intense for some riders. However, it is worth noting that the ride is not as intense as some roller coasters and its intensity can vary from person to person. It may be intense for some visitors and less for others.

What to Expect:

  • Not a lot of light, it is very dark at the end of the ride.
  • Intense drops and sudden rises once inside the elevator shaft.
  • A spooky Twilight Zone Theme.

It’s a subjective experience, ultimately depending on each individual’s fear level and what they find scary.

The Hollywood Tower of Terror Theme

The Tower of Terror ride is themed around the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel, an elegant hotel that was said to have been struck by lightning and left abandoned.

The theme of the ride is the “Twilight Zone”, a reference to the popular TV show from the 1950s and 60s, which featured stories of the supernatural, science fiction and the unknown. The ride is meant to give visitors a sense of being transported to another dimension and time, a haunted and abandoned hotel in the Twilight Zone.

The abandoned look of Tower of Terror is spooky as you enter the building.

The ride features elements of the 1920s and 30s Art Deco design, which is a popular theme for Hollywood and that era. The architecture, design and details of the hotel are meant to give the impression of a grand and luxurious hotel that was once the center of the Hollywood social scene but now abandoned and in disarray due to the lightning strike.

Throughout the ride, guests encounter various elements that are designed to be eerie and spooky, such as ghosts, flickering lights, mysterious sounds, and other special effects. The whole experience is designed to create a sense of unease and suspense, as if guests are being taken on a journey into the unknown.

The combination of the Twilight Zone theme, the story of the Hollywood Tower Hotel and the free fall sensation, makes this ride one of the most iconic and memorable at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Ride Experience

The Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios takes place inside the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel, which is said to have been struck by lightning and left abandoned. Guests enter the hotel and are taken on an elevator ride that simulates a descent into the “fifth dimension.”

The elevator is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the hotel’s former guests, and the ride features special effects, such as flashing lights and spooky imagery, to create a sense of unease.

During the ride, guests are taken up to the top of the tower in an elevator. Once at the top, the elevator doors open to reveal a view of the park, before the elevator plummets down at high speeds and also throws you up the lift shaft too. This section is where the free-fall sensation happens, giving riders a feeling like they’re falling. The elevator then goes back to the top and then drops again a couple of times, before returning to the loading area.

Overall, Tower of Terror is a great thrill ride with a spooky theme that combines special effects and a free-fall sensation to create a unique and thrilling experience. It’s an iconic ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and definitely worth trying if you’re a thrill seeker looking for a new experience.

The Ride Vehicle

The ride vehicle is an Elevator which you enter from the Hotel’s plant room in it’s basement. The ride vehicle is an Automated Guided Vehicle that follows a  marked path on the floor until it reaches the drop point.

There are three rows of seats with a walkway through the middle. On entering you will have to secure your seat belt and pull on its yellow tag so that the cast member loading you onto the ride can give you the all clear to depart on your trip into the Twilight Zone.

The weightlessness experienced during the drops aren’t actually caused by the vehicles free falling. Instead, the vehicle is actually being pulled downward instead of simply free falling.

How Scary Are the Drops?

The Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios features multiple drops and also upward launches throughout the experience. Each drop is designed to simulate the sensation of falling, and the ride uses a combination of special effects and mechanical elements to create the feeling of plummeting.

The drops on the Tower of Terror are designed to be fast, scary and intense. The exact speed of the drops varies depending on the ride system, and also depend on whether it’s the original version or the one that was adapted to a new theme. However, the speed of the drops typically ranges from around 39 mph to 44 mph, and they can last around 5 to 6 seconds each.

These drops are designed to be fast enough to create a feeling of weightlessness and to give riders a sense of falling.

Some children as young as 7 or 8 years old may be able to handle the ride, while others who are older may find it too intense. As a parent, it’s a good idea to preview the ride and use your own judgment in determining whether or not it’s appropriate for your child.

For reference my children were 6 and 8 when they first rode the ride, but they are both quite daring and brave when it comes to thrill rides. My son was desperate to be tall enough for both Tower of Terror and Rock n Roller Coaster and he was very happy to get on both during our first trip.

It is always recommended that parents supervise and accompany their children in the ride. The ride has a pre-show with flashing lights and strobe effects, so children with photo-sensitive epilepsy should be aware of that, and Disney offers a guide for guests with disabilities including this condition on their website.
