What to Wear at Disney World in March

What to Wear to Orlando and Disney World in March

Like most people, I always assumed that the weather in Florida was fairly constant and that it only had three settings, hotter than the surface of Mercury and more humid than a tropical rainforest and torrential, but brief downpours.

That’s why I initially thought that the clothes that you should pack for a Walt Disney World Vacation in March, would pretty much be the same as the clothes that you’d pack for a trip to the Magic Kingdom in July or August.

I was wrong, as the weather in Florida is seasonal, just like it is everywhere else and that seasonal difference in the climate means that you’ll have to pack, and dress accordingly.

Orlando and Walt Disney World In March

The temperature differential between early Spring and Summer in Florida is enormous, and on average there’s almost a thirty-degree difference between March and August. In Summer it isn’t unusual for it to be close to one hundred degrees Fahrenheit by lunchtime, but in March the temperature rarely exceeds the high seventies.

While that’s warm for most of us, by Florida standards it’s actually pretty cool, and you’ll definitely feel a chill in the air when you’re walking around the parks. Unless you’re planning on visiting the animal kingdom

It’s always warm in the largest park in Walt Disney World, as the volume of concrete used in the park’s construction coupled with the amount of foliage, unique vegetation, and the animal population means that it retains heat far better than the other parks do.

What to Wear in March at Disney World - Animal Kingdom

Unfortunately, the urban myth about the Animal Kingdom having its own microclimate is nothing more than a myth.

There’s a reason why Walt Disney World is usually quieter in March than it is in other months and it isn’t just because of school breaks and vacations, it’s because it’s more likely to rain on any given day in March in Florida than it is at any other point in the year.

But if you’re unwilling to let a little rain and cooler weather spoil your enjoyment of Disney magic, then you’ll need to know what to pack for, and what to wear on your WDW vacation.

The Orlando and Walt Disney World March Wardrobe

Even though the weather in other parts of the country might mean that you’ll need to wrap up in your winter ensemble, March in Florida is slightly different. So, here’s a list of what I usually pack when my family and I head to Orlando when Spring is in the air.

Cargo Shorts – It might be cooler, but that doesn’t mean that it’s cold, and a cargo shorts and a sweater or sweatshirt ensemble will ensure that you stay warm even if it does get a little windy in the parks.

Sweatshirts –  I’ve already mentioned sweatshirts and I always pack enough of them to last for the duration of our stay. They’re warm enough to keep the cold at bay if the temperature doesn’t climb much past fifty degrees Fahrenheit, but they’re not so warm that you’ll be uncomfortable if the outside temperature does reach, and stay in the mid-seventies.

What towear at Disney World in March

T-Shirts – Florida can be an unpredictable beast weather-wise at the best of times, and so you shouldn’t be surprised if it does get pretty warm on the odd day here and there, which is when a t-shirt or two might come in handy.

Besides, if it does get too cold, you can always throw a t-shirt on underneath a sweatshirt and you’ll be snug as a bug in a rug and ready to face the coldest days that Orlando and the parks throw at you.

Hoodies And A Windbreaker – Then there are the colder evenings, which are a lot colder in Florida in March than they usually are. My solution?

Wear a windbreaker or a zip-up hooded sweatshirt in the evening and either, or both should make sure that you’re warm enough to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Expedition Everest, and the Tower of Terror.

If you’re planning on riding the Kali River Rapids or Splash Mountain though, make sure that you hire a locker and take a change of clothes with you. You don’t want to be caught in wet clothes on a colder March evening in Florida, that isn’t a comfortable or a  pleasant experience. Trust me, I’ve been there and I know what I’m talking about.

Jeans – Throw a couple of pairs of jeans in your suitcase, you’ll probably be glad that you did, and while you’re at it, a more formal shirt or two wouldn’t hurt either. If you’re planning to attend a special dining event, you’ll feel more comfortable if you dress a little more formally.

SneakersThe simple fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter when you head to Walt Disney World, as soon as you get there, you’ll do a lot of walking. That means you’ll need a comfortable pair of sneakers to walk around in, and the more comfortable they are, the less likely your feet are to hurt, and the more you’ll enjoy your time in the parks.

Preparing Your Children’s Wardrobe For Orlando and Disney World in March

Don’t stress about it and don’t worry, just pack the same sort of clothes for your children as you do for yourself. But, remember to leave some room in their suitcases, as there’s a pretty good chance that they’ll probably come back with a few more sweatshirts and t-shirts than they left with.

The Last Word On The March Wardrobe

As I’ve said, it’s colder and wetter in Florida in March than it is in Summer and Autumn, so as long as you pack some warmer clothes, there’s absolutely nothing to stop you from having a great time in the parks and experiencing a little Spring Disney Magic.
