Now I’m all for being prepared for pretty much any eventuality whilst visiting the Disney World parks but there are times when you may be able to do Disney World without a backpack.
I find that carrying a full sized backpack can be pretty restrictive, the bigger the bag the more stuff you find you “need” to carry and you may find yourself carrying around everyone else’s sweatshirts and souvenirs not to mention the extra heat a backpack creates on your back!

4 options instead of a backpack
Of course there are times when a backpack is essential and would be the best option for a park visit, those planning on bringing their own food and drink into the park, perhaps a change of clothes or footwear for any accidents, water rides or sudden downpours of rain for example a backpack can not really be avoided. However there are many other options for you to take instead of a backpack – you could even go completely bagless!! Yes it can be done!
- A crossover Bag
- Fanny Pack
- Fold up Bag
- Or Just Go Completely Bagless!!

1. Crossover Bags
These are my go-to bags for the parks, they are big enough to fit all the essentials in, are easy to carry and access and you can even wear them on some of the rides.
Crossover come in a variety of sizes, shapes and styles so you can choose which will be best for you depending on how much you feel you will need to carry. They are great for putting in disposable ponchos, small cameras, purse, sunscreen, sunglasses, small first aid kit such as plasters for those blisters, painkillers (including supplies for the kids) and snacks. You can even clip on water bottles and sun hats to keep them at hand.
Below you find some examples of what we like to use that you can find on Amazon (click the image for the latest prices or find the full range here):
You can also find a selection of clip on water bottles here (we like the collapsible ones)
Crossover bags and fanny packs are much easier to access than a backpack, you don’t necessarily need to stop to put anything in or get anything out saving a few precious moments whilst you are in the parks.
Another advantage of a bag being in front of you or on your side is that they are less likely to be a target of any loose fingered guests (I know a horrible thought especially in the happiest place on Earth but it can and unfortunately does happen!).
2. Fanny Packs
Our daughter used a fanny pack throughout our last Disney World vacation and it worked really well for her. She could safely carry her phone, purse and other bits and pieces and it was never a problem when enjoying the rides in the parks.
You can find a great range of Disney fanny packs on Amazon too using this link.
Here’s a design we really like:
Using these crossover bags and fanny packs also means that you won’t unintentionally bump other guests with a backpack on your shoulders, very easily done when walking around or standing in line.
You don’t have to remove them when on some of the rides as long as they fit under the restraints and don’t interfere with any safety equipment. The only rides which I have had to remove my cross over bag have been Slinky Dog Dash, Soarin, Test Track and Rock and Roller Coaster.
You can find out more about Taking Bags on Rides at Disney World here.
These types of bags also help to keep you a bit cooler in that Floridian heat. A great big backpack on your back all day can leave you feeling rather hot! And no one wants a backpack shaped mark on their top!
3. Fold up Bags and Going Bag less
Standing in the bag check line not for you? Well another “lighter” option that allows you to skip that part is to take in all your essentials in your pockets and a fold up bag if you want. This option means you will have to visit with only the bare essentials or have big pockets!
You can still carry small sunscreen, camera, sunglasses, purse/wallet in your pockets whilst wearing your magic band or have your ticket in a lanyard around your neck.
Using a clip on water bottle that can attach to a belt or loop is another way of not needing a bag. Once through security unfold the bag and place your bits in. Some options look easier to carry than others but will depend on what you will want to put in.
4. Bonus Tip: Cargo Shorts with Big Side Pockets
My husband always wears cargo shorts with big side pockets when we visit Disney World. You can fit quite a lot in the side pockets as well as the normal pockets. He comfortably carries a smartphone, a camera, his wallet and his sunglasses case plus some other items when needed too. This can be a really good option not just for men but for women too.
My husband wears cargo shorts like the ones below which you can find on Amazon here (or click the image).
Remember that if you haven’t packed it Disney will probably sell it. The parks sell a variety of sundries that pretty much cover most everyday needs. It won’t always be cheap compared to off site prices but they are there if you get caught out. There are also a number of first aid/baby care stations that have items such as medicine, diapers etc that you can purchase.
If you are staying on property at a Disney World Resort you will find that you resort store sells a lot of day to day provisions that you may need.
Perks of Staying at a Disney World Resort
Make use of the free delivery of any souvenirs you buy that Disney offers if you stay onsite or collect it at the end of your day from guest services at the entrance so you will avoid needing a backpack for those.
Top tip: choose a bag that is waterproof (for the water rides and rain!) and that has secure closures such as a zip or buttons to stop things falling out.
Of Course You Could Just Take a Backpack
You may find that you really need to take a backpack. If you do take a look at our article on the Best Bags for Disney World which you can find here or just click the image below.
When is it Easy To Do Disney World Without a Backpack?
Part day or evening visits to the parks are when it is easiest not to take a bag or backpack to the parks. We’ve found that when we have evening dining plans where we return to our resort before heading back out to the parks is when you really don’t need a backpack or bag.
It Gets Easier As Your Kids Get Older
When our kids were younger we took a lot more stuff to the parks with us. As they have gotten a little older it has been easier to take less stuff with us. We don’t go through wet wipes like we used to for example and as I mentioned above on our last visit to Disney World our daughter used a Fanny Pack and carried her own items. It does get easier as the kids get older.
Disney World Without a Backpack is Possible
It is definitely possible to do Disney World without a Backpack. You will need to be organized and know what you really need to take with you and may need to spread the load across your family/party a little but it can be done.
